Practice Services

General Practitioner Training Scheme

From time to time, qualified doctors who have worked in various hospital specialities, and whom are intending to become General Practitioners, are invited to join the practice for six months or one year, so that they may gain insight into the sort of medical problems encountered in their future in General Practice.

Availability of Doctors

Routine consultations with all doctors are by appointment only, and can be made by telephoning the appointments department on: 01633 277771

In an attempt to improve our system and make it easier for you to see a doctor urgently, we have introduced un-booked surgeries every weekday morning from 8.30-10.30 a.m. This means that if you have a medical problem requiring immediate treatment, you can attend any morning between these times

Please note however, these surgeries are reserved for emergencies only. Routine consultations will not be dealt with at this time.

Booked apppointments with your desired general practitioner, can usually be made for the afternoon surgeries.

On average 150 patients per month fail to keep their appointment. This equals Seventeen hours of Surgery time. If you cannot keep your appointment, please telephone and cancel it as soon as possible so that another may be booked in.

Practice Area

The practice area ranges ten miles from borders of the River Usk in the West to Llanvaches in the East. Some areas, i.e. Bettws, Malpas, Duffryn, Pillgwenlly and anywhere west of the HighCross, M4 Junction are excluded due to the closure of the old Handpost Branch Surgery.

There is a NEW branch surgery on the east side of Newport at Alway. This is equipped with two consulting rooms and a treatment room with full ground-floor disabled access. Services are continually being expanded at this site. Access to services and appoinments at this site are available by dialing the main telephone number at Beechwood (ie 01633 277771).

Registration

All patients who provide Evidence of Residency within the designated practice area are eligible to register with the practice.

Registration request can be accepted by either submitting your existing NHS Card, or completing appropriate Registration forms and Questionaires, together with Evidence of Residence or Evidence of Right to Residence.

Test Results

For enquiries about test results, you may telephone one of the 'computer operators' on the direct-dial numbers outlined below. If they are satisfied with your identity, they will confirm if a result has been received. All doctors have different ways of dealing with test results, therefore sometimes you will be given the results, but at other times you may be asked to attend the surgery and see the doctor.

Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescription may be ordered by returning the request slip provided with the previous prescription, with the required items clearly ticked. The slip can be posted to us or put in the box provided in reception. Please allow two full working days to enable the prescription to be prepared and signed. If you provide a stamped, addressed envelope we will post the prescription back to you.

Please note: we do not take requests for repeat prescriptions over the telephone.

Health Promotion Clinics and Other Services

Beechwood Surgery provides several health promotional clinics, run by the doctors, nurses, midwives and/or health visitors each catering for different aspects of healthcare.

Telephone Advice

If you wish to speak to a doctor, please telephone and ask for enquiries. The receptionist will take some details and the doctor will call you back when it is convenient. Calls will not be put through to the doctor during surgery.

For your protection and for the purposes of training all telephone calls toand from the practice are recorded.

Home Visits

It is not customary for doctors to provide routine home visits. Patients too ill or infirm to come to surgery can be visited at the doctor's discretion. We would very much appreciate your request before 10.30a.m. and for you to givr the recptionist as much information as possible to help the doctor assess the urgency. You may be telephoned by the doctor to discuss your request. The doctor can see on average six patients in the surgery in the time taken for a home visit.

Saturday Surgery

There is NO LONGER a Saturday Morning surgery - for ALL emergencies please refer to the Out-of-Hours Service.

Out of hours (What to do when the Surgery is Closed)

The newly formed Gwent Out of Hours Services, will provide a range of services for patients who need urgent medical treatment or advice. Between 6.30 pm and 8.00 am on weekdays, the whole of weekends, Bank Holidays or Public holidays you will now need to dial a new telephone number if you need to see a doctor urgently and cannot wait until the next working day.

The new number is 0845 600 1231.

Please do not use this number for prescriptions, test results or routine enquiries.

When you dial the new number, specially trained NHS staff will ask you some questions. They will then:

* Pass you on to a doctor or nurse who can give you advice over the telephone
* Refer you to a Primary Care Centre for an appointment to see a doctor
* Arrange a home visit
* Refer your call to the Ambulance Service

You may also telephone NHS Direct for (Nurse-led) advice at any time on 0845-46-47.

B.I.R.D.

In attempt to provide a unified approach in the various clinical and functional aspects at Beechwood Surgery, we have formulated a number of protocols and guidelines applicable to the relevant administrative, clinical and pharmaceutical processes.

Unfortunately, the majority of the information is very practice and locality specific, and thereby only accessible via the Practice Intranet. The vast resource database that has been developed, consists of nearly half a gigabit of data, and thus not practical to host on an internet server. Should interested parties wish to host this database locally on their own intranet server, enquiries should be made directly to the webmaster.
