Information for Diabetics who need an Annual Review

Diabetes is a disease than can affect many different parts of the body, and as part of a routine diabetic care we offer our patients annual reviews. During this review we check for early signs of disease affecting the eyes, kidneys, feet and circulatory system, as well as overall diabetic control.

You will be required to make an appointment for this review. About two weeks before the actual clinic date you will need to make an appointment with the Practice Nurse for a blood test. This test looks for an average blood sugar reading and check the kidney function, liver function, thyroid function and perform a vitamin test. A urine test is also carried out to check for protein.

On the day of the clinic appointment, we will need to dilate the pupils of your eyes so that we can have a good look at the back of the eye. This does mean that your vision will be slightly blurred for about two hours and we recommend that you do not drive for this period of time. However, if you are already attending the Eye Clinic for treatment for glaucoma or other eye problems, then this procedure will not be performed.

The appointment usually takes between half and three quarters of an hour.
